The museum was founded in 1776 by Maria Teresa of Austria, Napoleon opened the palace to the public and stocked it with numerous great works gathered by his armies.

The original collection of Brera was then enlarged thanks to many donations and legacies.

Among the most important works held inside the Brera art gallery we have the Dead Christ e la Madonna of the Cherubim by Mantegna, la Piety by Giovanni Bellini, the Betrothal of the Virgin by Raphael, the Montefeltro Altarpiece by Piero della Francesca, the Christ at the column by Bramante, the San Girolamo Penitent by Tiziano, the Supper in Emmaus by Caravaggio, the Kiss by Hayez and the Brawl in the Gallery by Boccioni.
