Bergamo is clearly visible from the A4 highway for those going North. The city is the first fortified center of the plain.
The city is usually divided in two parts: Bergamo Alta (Upper Bergamo) and Bergamo Bassa (Lower Bergamo). This partition became even more strong during the XVI century with the building of the Venetian Walls, with a perimeter of more than 5 km. Several doors and gates allow for communication between the two parts of the city.
